Adding email records in Squarespace Domains

Squarespace adds your domain to each record name for you, so type only the prefix, such as _dmarc. Former Google Domains registrations are managed here too.

Steps

  1. Open the domains dashboard at account.squarespace.com/domains and select your domain.
  2. Click DNS, then DNS Settings, scroll down to Custom Records and click Add record.
  3. Choose the type (TXT or CNAME for SPF and DKIM), enter the name (@ for the root domain, _dmarc for DMARC) and paste the data.
  4. Leave TTL at the default of 4 hours unless your provider gives one, then save the record.

Common mistakes

  • Squarespace allows only one DMARC record per domain. When a second service asks for DMARC, change the existing _dmarc record instead of trying to add another.
  • Quotation marks in the Data field of an SPF record can cause propagation issues depending on your nameservers. Squarespace says to remove them if the SPF record doesn't resolve.
  • Once a domain uses custom nameservers, the records in its Squarespace DNS settings no longer apply. Re-add MX, DKIM and other mail records at the nameserver provider.
  • Former Google Domains customers on custom nameservers lost Google's built-in email forwarding in the migration. To restore it, Squarespace says to add its two Mailgun MX records (mxa.mailgun.org and mxb.mailgun.org) and two TXT records at the nameserver provider.

Watch out for

  • Squarespace took over every Google Domains registration on September 7, 2023. If your domain came from Google Domains, its DNS settings are now in your Squarespace account.
  • A third-party domain connected via DNS Connect keeps its DNS at that provider, so add the records there instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a separate SPF record for each sender in Squarespace?

Yes. Squarespace says to add each SPF record individually as a custom record, and its system then merges them into one automatically.

Do long DKIM keys need splitting in Squarespace?

Usually not. Squarespace supports DKIM and SPF records up to 2048 bits, while other TXT records are limited to 255 characters.

Should I change the TTL Squarespace fills in for a new record?

No, unless your provider gives a TTL. Squarespace says to leave it at the default of 4 hours.

How long does a nameserver change take at Squarespace?

Squarespace says new nameservers can take up to 48 hours to start working properly.
